Extra Credit for Real World Skills?

Now that summer is finally here, many of our students will not just be making up high school credits through summer classes – many will also be working towards their diploma by taking advantage of programs that offer progress through real-world job experience and training. If you are a student who was looking for a way to finish your diploma faster while preparing for a career in your particular trade, then one of these opportunities may be perfect for you:

1. Work experience credits. Nearly any form of part-time employment can help you qualify towards your high school diploma. In fact, you do not even have to accept a paid position. While a number of our students work in auto shops or retail positions, some volunteer at hospitals and nonprofit organizations. In Alberta, up to 15% of your high school education can come in the form of work experience, so there is no reason you cannot get a head start on your career while still furthering your education.

2. A registered apprenticeship. In the same way, the government of Alberta recognizes more than 50 trades – including plumbers, welders, carpenters, and mechanics, to give few examples – which students can apprentice in and earn up to 40 credits towards their high school graduation. This is a wonderful program, not only because it allows working students to complete their diplomas quickly, but also because it gives them a jumpstart on a great career. In fact, many of our students go on to be hired by the professionals they have apprenticed under.

3. The Green certificate program. Unique to Alberta, this program allows you to earn up to 16 high school credits from experience working in agricultural operation. The program is not limited to any one kind of farm or ranch; you can earn the certificate by working with equines, cows and calves, sheep, dairy farms, or even field crop operations. Regardless of whether you are working on a family farm or a larger business enterprise, you have the opportunity to earn the same Green certificate that any adult would, giving you both a vital piece of your Alberta education and valuable credentials that you can use to find a job after school.

Could you take advantage of one of these programs? If you are someone with a serious professional interest in trade, want some real world experience, or are just looking for a different way to fulfill some of your high school credit needs, then contact us today to get more information. It just might be the answer you need to jumpstart your online education and career at the same time.
